About our Support Staff

Jamie Inlow

Director of As-U-R

I went to James Madison University and received my B.S. in Health Assessment and Promotion, which led me to Appalachian State University to pursue a M.S. in Clinical Exercise Science.  I had goals to pursue a career in strength protocol development for astronauts with NASA. I began working as a full-time graduate assistant in the Learning Assistance Program with "at-risk" student athletes.  I worked one-on-one with students implementing organizational strategies, study skills, and strategic tutoring methods. I fell in love with working in a higer education setting with students and pursued a practicum in the Learning Assistance Program working as the Men's Tennis and Baseball Academic Advisor. Upon graduation with my Master's, I had abandoned my originial career goals and accepted a position working as the Director of As-U-R with College STAR.  I love this job and I am thankful for the experience in the Learning Assistance Program that molded me to assist in the growth of As-U-R on Appalachian's campus.

My office is located in our Study Central Suite in Edwin Duncan and I teach two seminars to incoming and current As-U-R students. Seminar 1 is for incoming students and focuses on goal development, organizational skills, study strategies, life skills, and discussion. Seminar 2 is open to all As-U-R students who are not currently enrolled in Seminar 1.  It is a book club class that focuses on gaining comfort with discussion-style classes.  We read "Learning Outside the Lines" by Jonathan Mooney and David Cole, as well as "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success" by Carol Dweck.  Students take turns being the discussion leader and are encouraged to participate in engaging discussion.

Michelle Knoud

Graduate Assistant - Support Staff

I recently received my B.S. in Communication Sciences & Disorders and will be returning back to Appalachian State to pursue my M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology. I am hoping to work in early intervention once I complete my degree. I have been working with the As-U-R program for about a year now and it has done nothing but good things for not only me, but everyone in the program. The students that I work with amaze me everyday and they help me just as much as I help them. We all work as a team in As-U-R and it has truly been a blessing to be a part of. I can't wait to see how this program will continue to grow in the upcoming years!

Jacob Hines

Graduate Assistant - Support Staff

I recently received my B.S. in Special Education and am currently working towards his M.A. in Special Education with a Reading Education Certificate and Autism Spectrum Disorder Certificate. I have been working with As-U-R as a mentor since the Fall 2015 semester.  I love As-U-R because of the community it creates between Support Staff and students, alike. I have personally experienced As-U-R's ability to restore student's confidence through accountability and intensive academic support. After graduation, I will be marrying his fiance on May 20th, 2017 and plan to teach high school.

I am a senior and have been a part of the As-U-R community since August 2015. I am studying Special Education and have recently been accepted into Appalachian State's Accelerated Admissions 4+1 Program. As-U-R is a program designed to fit any need and is willing to accept the challenge of college life and the pressures of University level course work. I am always impressed by the As-U-R program's ability to be a supportive community for all staff and students. Positivity, accountability, and commitment are the qualities I admire and appreciate most about the As-U-R program.

I am currently a senior studying Special Education with a minor in Psychology. I have recently finished my second summerworking as an 8th grade science teacher  with Student U, a non-profit out of Durham, NC which has helped me gain valuable teaching experience. I was drawn to the As-U-R program due to the fact that I believe that the work that the program does to give students and staff the confidence and resources to release their inner academic and personal brilliance is crucially needed in our community. I look forward to working with the As-U-R program to hone my personal skill set and to gain the tools to help others do the same.
